I understand that people who have read the book may be disappointed, but as an uneducated viewer this is a fantastic film!
Novel situation, novel location beautiful images, even though the beach was re-modeled , novel plot, novel characters all of whom are wildly different yet possible to sympathise with - except maybe for Bugs I hate knowing the end of a story at least an hour before it finally grinds its inevitable way there see any "action" film.

I immediately liked it when I saw it as a teenager, but at that time it was for the initial elements on the surface, such as the interesting characters, the beautiful tropical island, the soundtrack, and the idea of an island utopia brought to life in a movie.
As I've grown older I've come to love those elements that lie under the surface, those human aspects, both good and bad. Without giving away any spoilers, I'll just say this; the ultimate message in question format in this movie is: Just how far would you go to create the perfect society?
My answer to that is that we have to change ourselves and increase our capacity for unconditional love before we can find the paradise we seek.
For some reason, I find The Beach infinitely fascinating. There's a mysterious act of violence near the beginning that draws DiCaprio's character into the search for an isolated island paradise.
I don't even mind that adolescent males feature so prominently in the plot with boredom and bravado driving much of the decision making.
Of course, the females aren't all that perfect either. The bored 20 somethings actually establish a primitive utopia free of most of the demands of civilization.
The main rule is not to divulge the existence of the island paradise.. It's interesting watching as the youthful colony lives close to nature.
Much of their diet consists of fish they catch and they build a rudimentary shelter. It's an endless summer of swimming, playing volleyball and lolling around with friends.
Unfortunately there's no escaping danger from nature or other people. The colony evolves maladaptive coping strategies, underreacting or ignoring serious problems while overreacting to less pressing concerns.
DiCaprio has a sort of breakdown in the middle of this experience that I'm not sure anyone else could've performed.
Also, these are college kids funded with money from home. The vacation has to end for all of them eventually.
The Beach of course lends itself to comparison with The Lord of the Flies. That these are young adults means they don't regress to the same extent as children.
Within group violence is almost nonexistent for instance. They're perhaps too civilized to survive long outside a world without police or emergency rooms.
At the end, violence from men who do know how to function in a world with few protections force the young adults back into the safety of society.
The return to the mundane in the form of internet cafes becomes a nice catharsis at the end. This movie is so underrated. It didn't deliver in because people were expecting Titanic, with Leo involved.
But this movie is a great peek into a life lived off the path. Can it be done? Is it worth it? It's real and beautiful and there are many incredible actors putting up incredible performances.
It is a shame it is unappreciated and ignored. It could have been filmed anywhere and much of it was! One person found this helpful. Not a lot of people got the essence of this film when it was first released but now that we're all a little older and wiser we need to give this film a second chance.
I was blown away and had a hard time just trying to give it back! The photography is beautiful, the editing is dynamic, the music made me fall in love with it.
Even the menus on the DVD are an experience to be had and the more I saw the movie the better I liked it every time. Give it another try and maybe, like me,you will discover something you didn't know you'd love.
This movie is well worth a watch and survives repeated viewings. I only regret that a Blu-ray version is not available. The story is definitely fascinating and the direction and acting are excellent.
A drama doesn't always have to stick so closely to reality that it unwaveringly mirrors everyday life. The entertainment value of a film sometimes hinges on its travel outside the normal realm of societal norms.
The Beach has just the right amount of reality, combined with the abstract 'dream-come-true' situation and all that comes with it.
The Beach focuses uniquely on the youthful psyche of one man, whose search for adventure outside the 'norm' leads him to what appears to be paradise.
But, as in reality, nothing dreamlike is perfect and without its price. This is very well portrayed in The Beach. I do see its similarity with Lord of the Flies, but The Beach burrows more deeply into a young man's mind who chose his path instead of being thrust into it involuntarily.
Like The Beach, the classic 70s film Papillon travels a bit outside conventional methods for telling a story to relay emotion that engages the viewer and entertains.
Those who have seen this film will note that Steve McQueen's memorable vision-of-death sequence climbs outside the box, but is entirely fitting and appropriate to the movie's successful progression.
That movie is a classic, despite its unusual plot execution.
