Slap on any given scene and ask the question "Now which decisions did you spot that should never have been made in this or any movie?

Mar 02, Suspenseful and full of mystery, The Snowman is an atmospheric noir thriller. Based on an international bestselling novel, the film follows a police detective who investigates a serial killer who targets women.
Simmons, the film has a pretty strong cast; though the performances are rather lackluster. And the script is kind of weak, doing a poor job at constructing the mystery and investigation.
Still, there are some intense scenes as the killer stalks his prey and crime scenes are discovered. It may not come together very well, but The Snowman is an engaging film with a fair amount of intrigue.
Dann M Super Reviewer. Jan 24, Michael Fassbender may be of the one of the most talented and reliable actors of his generation but the same can't always be said about some of his film choices.
Assassin's Creed only added to another failed video-game adaptation and his work with Ridley Scott on Prometheus, Alien: Covenant and The Counselor also failed to impress although, I was admittedly one of the few admirers of the latter film.
My point being, though, is that he's now not quite as bankable as he once was. Over recent years, you're just as likely to catch a stinker as you are a work of quality and The Snowman doesn't do anything to remedy this issue.
Plot: Alcoholic, crime squad detective Harry Hole Michael Fassbender finds himself on the trail of an elusive serial killer who kills when the first snow of winter falls.
With the help a new recruit Rebecca Ferguson he has to compare the new case with decades old ones to connect the dots and track down the a killer that's been on the loose for some time.
Due to delays, DiCaprio walked away, Scorsese ended up as executive producer and Scott walked as well. It could've been time constraints that led to them distancing themselves or just maybe these two experienced directors seen problems ahead and made a wise choice.
There are undeniable problems and if truth be told, I fell asleep on the first viewing and went back to it again thinking that I hadn't given it my full attention and may have missed something.
I hadn't. The film is sleep-inducingly dull and lacks so much narrative drive that it's hard to keep your eyes open. Put simply, it's a ridiculously lazy film with an insultingly lazy script.
The sheer incoherence of it makes no difference whether you've slept through it or not. It's the quality involved that makes this a surprisingly awful endeavour though; there's Fassbender, of course, and also the usually reliable J.
So what is the problem? The problem obviously stems from it being a rushed production. James shows the snowman around his house, playing with appliances, toys and other bric-a-brac , all while keeping quiet enough not to wake James' parents.
The two find a sheeted-down motorcycle in the house's garden and go for a ride on it through the woods. Its engine heat starts to melt the snowman and he cools off in the garage freezer.
Seeing a picture of the arctic on a packet in the freezer, the snowman is agitated and takes the boy in hand, running through the garden until they take flight.
They continue through an arctic landscape and into the aurora borealis. They land in a snow-covered forest where they join a party of snowmen.
They eventually meet Father Christmas along with his reindeer; he gives the boy a card and a scarf with a snowman pattern.
The snowman returns home with James before the sun rises and the two bid farewell for the night. On Christmas Day the following morning, James wakes up to find that the snowman has melted, leaving only his hat, scarf, coal eyes, tangerine nose, and coal buttons in a pile of melted snow.
James kneels down by the snowman's remains while holding his scarf, mourning the loss of him. The original introduction on Channel 4 features the author Raymond Briggs walking through a field in rural Sussex describing his inspiration for the story, which then transitions into the animated landscape of the film.
The film's executive producer Iain Harvey had received interest in the film from U. However, he noted that "in the US programmes were sponsored, and to be sponsored you needed a big name".
Various names such as Sir Laurence Olivier and Julie Andrews were suggested, but a request for a rock star led to David Bowie being involved.
In the sequence, Bowie was filmed in the attic of 'his' childhood home and discovering a scarf in a drawer closely resembling the one given to the boy towards the end of the film.
To celebrate the film's 20th anniversary, Channel 4 created an alternate opening directed by Roger Mainwood, with Raymond Briggs' interpretation of Father Christmas recounting how he met the boy.
This version is also cropped to fit a widescreen format. Channel 4 used this opening from until Mel Smith's death in , after which they returned to using the Bowie opening, also returning the film to its original aspect ratio.

The film re-entered at No. A new minute special titled The Snowman and the Snowdog aired on Channel 4 on Christmas Eve to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original short and of Channel 4.
The idea of a sequel had been resisted by Raymond Briggs for several years, but he gave his permission for the film in The sequel was dedicated to the memory of producer John Coates , [23] who died in September , during its production.

The story is told through images and movement. The production has had several revisions — the most extensive happening in , when major changes were made to the second act, introducing new characters: The Ice Princess and Jack Frost.

Katrine goes by herself, hoping to bring Vetlesen to justice, but finds him dead of a gunshot wound to the head, along with the remains of Hegen Dahl and Becker.
The police rule Vetlesen's death a suicide and suspend Katrine for breaking protocol. She sets up a camera, hoping to trap him into a confession of her father's death, but is attacked and drugged by a masked figure who severs her right finger.
The killer uses the finger to unlock her work tablet and wipe out all its data. The next morning, Harry finds Katrine dead inside a car decorated by the outline of a snowman on its roof.
Rakel visits Harry, admitting she is conflicted and misses him. They start kissing passionately but are interrupted by a phone call. The next day, Harry realizes Mathias worked at Vetlesen's clinic and is the killer.
Meanwhile, Mathias kidnaps Rakel and Oleg, taking them to a cottage in Telemark. Harry locates the cottage and finds Mathias holding the mother and child hostage.
Mathias is revealed to be the boy from the first scene, hating his mother for abandoning him and eventually targeting mothers whom he judges are harming their children.
Harry frees Rakel from a wire fastening harness but loses a finger. Mathias escapes and Harry chases him onto a frozen lake. Mathias shoots Harry then walks towards him.
The ice beneath him breaks apart and falling into the water, dragged beneath the ice by the current. The final scene shows Harry back at work with his finger reattached, volunteering for a new homicide case.

This led to narrative problems when editing commenced:. Our shoot time in Norway was way too short, we didn't get the whole story with us and when we started cutting we discovered that a lot was missing.
It's like when you're making a big jigsaw puzzle and a few pieces are missing so you don't see the whole picture.
It happened very abruptly, suddenly we got notice that we had the money and could start the shoot in London.
